Mediterranean
Located at the gateway to the Mediterranean, the Festival d’Aix has chosen to strengthen its territorial anchorage and the various cultural heritages that shape its environment. Each summer, it highlights the musical creativity inherent to the Mediterranean basin, in all its diversity and singularity. A unique position in the European operatic landscape.
— A PROGRAMME FOCUSED ON THE MEDITERRANEAN
For each edition, up to ten concerts give a voice to the various cultures of the Mediterranean as well as to the artists who travel its shores and whose diversity influence their creation.
By programming the ‘Mediterranean’ concerts, the Festival d’Aix honours the memory of the civilizations of this region and highlights the expressions, the commitment and the talents of contemporary artists.
— THE MEDITERRANEAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Since 1984, the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (MYO) has been supporting the budding careers of young artists from the Mediterranean basin. It promotes the expression and dialogue of Mediterranean cultural diversity, and the creation of new repertoires, involving the widest possible audience. Its programmes are an important springboard and a unique showcase for its young talents.
This summer, the MYO’s symphonic session brings together more than a hundred gifted young instrumentalists, who have been auditioned throughout the year in conservatories of the Mediterranean basin. Led by British conductor and composer Duncan Ward and with the mentorship of musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra, the MYO shares in its concerts its passion for the great symphonic repertoire, contemporary creation, and its Mediterranean roots.

— A DIFFUSION AND CIRCULATION NETWORK
In order to support the MYO’s artists, the Medinea network [MEDiterranean INcubator of Emerging Artists], created in 2014, has been conceived as a grouping of more than thirty institutions in seventeen countries, with the aim of developing innovative projects that encourage dialogue, encounters, knowledge sharing, and the mobility of artists around the Mediterranean.
Medinea is supported by Erasmus+ for its 2021-2023 programme, with which it intends to contribute to meeting the needs of the Mediterranean cultural and creative sectors: to energise and nourish the dialogue between the countries of the Mediterranean basin and to strengthen the role of the sectors in favour of social inclusion and professional integration of young artists.
The programme is coordinated by the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, and five leading musical and cultural institutions from six countries from the Mediterranean basin: Ente Musicale di Nuoro (Italy) ARC Research and Consultancy (Malta) Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (Portugal) University of Ljubljana – Academy of Music (Slovenia) Istanbul Technical University – MIAM (Turkey).
A new online programme, Medinea On Air, enables young artists to train with high-level speakers from the Medinea network.
